Dental Sensitivity: Causes, Treatment and Prevention | Smiles Peru

Dental sensitivity (also called tooth sensitivity) is a common problem that causes a sharp, temporary pain when teeth come into contact with cold, hot, sweet, or acidic foods and drinks, or even cold air.

It usually happens when the protective enamel is worn down or when the gums recede and expose the more sensitive root surface of the tooth.

Common causes of dental sensitivity

  • Worn or thin enamel (from aggressive brushing, acidic foods/drinks, or grinding)
  • Gum recession that exposes the tooth roots
  • Tooth decay, cracks, or worn fillings
  • Recent dental treatments (such as whitening or deep cleanings)
  • Teeth grinding (bruxism)

Treatment options

Depending on the cause and severity, treatment may include:

  • Desensitizing toothpaste
  • Professional fluoride treatments
  • Dental bonding or sealants to cover exposed areas
  • Gum graft procedures in cases of significant recession
  • Root canal treatment when sensitivity is severe and persistent

How to prevent dental sensitivity

  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and avoid aggressive brushing
  • Use a desensitizing toothpaste regularly
  • Limit acidic foods and drinks, and rinse with water afterward
  • Wear a night guard if you grind your teeth
  • Maintain good oral hygiene and attend regular dental check-ups
  • Avoid frequent whitening treatments without professional guidance

When to see a dentist

You should schedule an evaluation if the sensitivity is persistent, severe, or affects your ability to eat or drink comfortably. A dentist can identify the exact cause and recommend the most appropriate treatment.
