What are zirconia crowns?
A zirconia crown is a full-coverage restoration made from zirconium dioxide, a high-strength ceramic material. Unlike older metal-based crowns, zirconia contains no metal. It is biocompatible, highly resistant to fracture, and can be matched closely to the color of natural teeth.
Modern zirconia is milled from a solid block using CAD/CAM technology. This produces a precise fit and consistent quality that is difficult to achieve with traditional laboratory methods.
They are commonly used to:
- Protect fractured or weakened teeth
- Restore teeth after root canal treatment
- Replace old crowns
- Improve the shape, color, or function of a tooth
- Cover dental implants (in selected cases)
Advantages of zirconia crowns
- Exceptional strength — Among the most fracture-resistant materials available for dental crowns
- Metal-free — No dark lines at the gumline and excellent biocompatibility
- Natural appearance — Modern zirconia offers good translucency and shade matching
- Precise digital fit — Designed and milled with CEREC CAD/CAM technology
- Often completed in one visit — No temporary crown required in many cases
- Long-term durability — Excellent clinical performance when properly maintained
- Conservative preparation — In many cases less tooth structure needs to be removed compared with older techniques
Types of zirconia crowns
Not all zirconia is the same. The two main categories used in modern dentistry are:
Monolithic (Full-Contour) Zirconia Milled from a single block of high-strength zirconia. Extremely durable and ideal for back teeth that take heavy chewing forces. Newer formulations have improved translucency compared to earlier versions.
High-Translucency / Multilayer Zirconia Designed to allow more light transmission, producing a more natural appearance. Suitable for many front teeth and premolars when both strength and aesthetics are required.
At Smiles Peru we select the appropriate type of zirconia based on the location of the tooth, the patient’s bite, and aesthetic goals.
Our zirconia crown process
We use an in-house CEREC digital workflow:
- Evaluation and digital scanning — Clinical examination, necessary X-rays or CBCT, and intraoral digital scan (no traditional impression trays in most cases).
- Digital design — The crown is designed on screen for optimal fit, occlusion, and aesthetics.
- Milling — The restoration is milled from a high-quality zirconia block in our clinic.
- Finishing and characterization — Color, texture, and glaze are refined for a natural result.
- Placement — The final crown is tried in, adjusted if needed, and bonded or cemented.
Many single crowns can be completed in one appointment lasting approximately 1.5–3 hours. This is particularly valuable for international patients with limited time in Lima.
Smiles Peru uses the revolutionary CEREC CAD/CAM system for zirconia crowns.
Zirconia crowns vs porcelain crowns
| Aspect | Zirconia Crowns | Porcelain Crowns |
| Strength | Very high | High |
| Aesthetics | Very good | Excellent (especially on front teeth) |
| Ideal location | Back and front teeth | Mainly front teeth |
| Digital fabrication | Yes (CEREC) | Yes (CEREC) |
| Metal-free | Yes | Yes |
Summary: Zirconia is usually the preferred choice when strength is the priority. High-quality porcelain (such as e.max) is often preferred when maximum translucency on front teeth is the main goal. In many cases we evaluate both options and recommend the material best suited to the individual tooth.
How Long Do Zirconia Crowns Last?
With proper oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups, zirconia crowns commonly last 15 years or longer. Their high strength contributes to excellent long-term performance, particularly on posterior teeth.
Longevity depends on several factors:
- Oral hygiene
- Bite forces and grinding habits
- Regular professional maintenance
- Quality of the original preparation and bonding
We provide guidance on care and, when appropriate, recommend a night guard for patients who grind their teeth.
Who is a good candidate?
Zirconia crowns are often recommended for patients who have:
- Fractured, cracked, or heavily restored teeth
- Teeth that have undergone root canal treatment
- Old crowns that need replacement
- High bite forces or a history of grinding
- Preference for metal-free restorations
- Need for durable crowns on back teeth
A clinical evaluation (including photos and radiographs) is the best way to determine whether zirconia is the optimal material for your case.
How much do zirconia crowns cost in Lima?
At Smiles Peru, zirconia crowns (and e.max crowns) start from $445 USD per tooth. This price includes premium materials, digital design and fabrication, and the clinical appointments required for the restoration.
Final cost depends on the number of crowns, any necessary preparatory treatment, and the complexity of the case. We provide a personalized estimate after reviewing your photos and radiographs.

Frequently asked questions about zirconia crowns
How long do zirconia crowns last? With good care they frequently last 15 years or more. Their strength makes them one of the most durable crown options available.
Can zirconia crowns be made in a single visit? Yes. Using CEREC technology, many zirconia crowns are designed, milled, and placed the same day, eliminating the need for a temporary crown.
Do zirconia crowns look natural? Modern zirconia offers very good aesthetics. For the most visible front teeth, high-translucency zirconia or e.max porcelain may be recommended depending on the individual case.
Is the procedure painful? The tooth is prepared under local anesthesia. Most patients experience only mild temporary sensitivity afterward.
Are zirconia crowns better than porcelain crowns? It depends on the tooth. Zirconia generally offers superior strength, especially for back teeth. Porcelain often provides slightly better translucency for highly visible front teeth. We help you choose the most appropriate material.
Can I complete treatment during a short trip to Peru? In many cases, yes. Single crowns can often be finished in one visit. More complex cases may require additional appointments, which we plan in advance.
