Postoperative Care for Dental Implants
Proper postoperative care is an important part of successful dental implant treatment. Following these guidelines will help reduce discomfort, support healing, and lower the risk of complications.
These are general recommendations. Always follow the specific instructions given by your dental team, as every case is different.
First 24–48 Hours
- Rest and avoid strenuous activity
- Keep your head elevated when lying down
- Apply ice packs to the outside of the face (10–15 minutes on, then off) to help control swelling
- Bite gently on gauze as instructed to control bleeding
- Take prescribed or recommended medication for pain and inflammation
Some light bleeding or pink saliva is normal during the first day.
Managing Swelling and Discomfort
Swelling usually peaks within the first 48–72 hours and then gradually decreases. Mild bruising can also occur.
Discomfort is normal and is usually well controlled with the medication recommended by your dentist. If pain increases significantly after the third day, contact the clinic.
Oral Hygiene
- Do not brush the surgical area on the first day
- Starting the following day, clean gently around the area as instructed
- Rinse carefully with salt water or the recommended mouthwash if advised
- Avoid vigorous rinsing or spitting during the first 24 hours
Keeping the area clean is important, but it must be done gently.
Diet Recommendations
For the first few days:
- Eat soft or liquid foods (yogurt, smoothies, soups, scrambled eggs, mashed foods)
- Avoid hot foods and drinks
- Do not use straws (the suction can disturb the healing site)
- Avoid hard, crunchy, or spicy foods
You can gradually return to a normal diet as comfort allows.
Activities to Avoid
During the first days after surgery, avoid:
- Smoking
- Alcohol
- Intense physical exercise
- Heavy lifting
Smoking in particular can significantly interfere with healing and increase the risk of implant complications.
Follow-up Visits
You will be scheduled for follow-up appointments so the team can check healing and determine the right timing for the next stage of treatment (such as placing the final restoration).
Attend all recommended visits and contact us if you have concerns between appointments.
When to Contact Us
Please contact the clinic if you notice any of the following:
- Bleeding that does not slow down with pressure
- Severe pain that is not controlled with medication
- Swelling that increases after the third day
- Fever or signs of infection
- Prolonged numbness
- The implant or temporary restoration feels loose
Long-Term Care of Dental Implants
Once healing is complete, dental implants require ongoing care similar to natural teeth:
- Brush twice a day
- Clean between the implants daily
- Attend regular professional check-ups and cleanings
- Avoid using your teeth to open packages or bite very hard objects
Good long-term maintenance is essential for the success of your implants.
