Dental Extractions | Simple & Surgical Tooth Removal – Smiles Peru

A dental extraction is the removal of a tooth that cannot be reliably saved or that is causing problems for the rest of the mouth. While the goal is always to preserve natural teeth when possible, extractions are sometimes the most appropriate treatment.

When a dental extraction may be needed

Teeth may need to be removed for several reasons, including:

  • Severe decay that cannot be restored
  • Advanced periodontal (gum) disease
  • Fractured teeth with a poor prognosis
  • Impacted or problematic wisdom teeth
  • Teeth that interfere with orthodontic or restorative treatment
  • Preparation for dental implants or full-mouth rehabilitation

Types of dental extractions

Extractions are generally grouped by complexity:

Simple extractions
Performed when the tooth is visible and can be removed without surgical access.

Surgical extractions
Needed when a tooth is broken, impacted, or not easily accessible. This may involve a small incision or removal of some bone.

Wisdom tooth extractions
Often more complex due to position, angulation, or incomplete eruption.

Wisdom tooth and molar crowding
Impacted or crowded teeth are a common reason for dental extractions.

What to expect

Before an extraction, the tooth and surrounding bone are evaluated clinically and with imaging when needed. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, and additional comfort options can be discussed when appropriate.

After the extraction, you will receive clear instructions for care during the first days of healing. Most patients recover comfortably when they follow postoperative guidance.

After an extraction

Once a tooth is removed, it is important to consider the next step. Depending on the case, options may include:

  • Dental implant replacement
  • A bridge
  • A removable option in selected cases
  • No immediate replacement, when appropriate

Leaving a space without a plan can lead to shifting teeth or bone loss over time, so a long-term solution is usually discussed as part of treatment planning.
