Dental Bridges

Dental Bridges in Lima | Types, Benefits & Procedure | Smiles Peru

A dental bridge is a fixed dental restoration used to replace one or more missing teeth. It is anchored to the natural teeth or implants on either side of the gap, restoring both function and appearance.

Dental bridges are a reliable and time-tested solution for patients who are not candidates for dental implants or who prefer a faster treatment option.

Types of Dental Bridges

There are several types of dental bridges, and the best option depends on your specific clinical situation:

  • Traditional Dental Bridge The most common type. It consists of one or more artificial teeth held in place by dental crowns cemented onto the teeth adjacent to the gap.
  • Cantilever Bridge Used when there is only one natural tooth next to the missing tooth. The bridge is supported by a single crown on one side.
  • Maryland Bridge (Resin-Bonded Bridge) A more conservative option that uses metal or porcelain wings bonded to the back of the adjacent teeth. It requires minimal preparation of the natural teeth.
  • Implant-Supported Bridge Instead of being supported by natural teeth, this type of bridge is fixed onto dental implants. It offers greater stability and helps preserve bone over time.

Benefits of Dental Bridges

Dental bridges provide several important advantages:

  • Restore the ability to chew and speak properly
  • Improve the appearance of your smile
  • Prevent remaining teeth from shifting out of position
  • Offer a fixed solution (unlike removable partial dentures)
  • Generally require less treatment time compared to dental implants

The Dental Bridge Procedure

The process of getting a dental bridge usually involves the following steps:

  1. Evaluation and Planning We examine your teeth and take X-rays or 3D scans to determine the best type of bridge for your case.
  2. Tooth Preparation The teeth that will support the bridge are shaped to accommodate dental crowns.
  3. Impressions Digital or traditional impressions are taken to create a custom bridge.
  4. Temporary Bridge A temporary bridge is placed while the permanent one is being fabricated.
  5. Final Placement Once ready, the permanent bridge is cemented or screwed into place.

Dental Bridges in Peru: Frequently Asked Questions

What are Dental Bridges?

Dental bridges are used to fill in the space of a missing tooth with a natural looking substitute. Bridges can be supported by adjacent teeth, by implants, or by a combination of both.

What are the benefits of Dental Bridges?

Due to advances in dental implants and dental implant-supported prostheses, conventional bridges supported by adjacent teeth are not as popular as they once were. However, we continue to recommend them as a good, lower cost alternative to dental implants, particularly in cases where the adjacent teeth need to be crowned or were previously crowned.

What is the procedure like?

The procedure begins much like a crown procedure: the supporting teeth are prepared. At Smiles Peru, digital impressions are taken using our digital scanner. Our in-house digital lab will then use computerized technology to customize your bridges from the best materials, including Zirconia. Our dentists will place the bridge, making any necessary adjustments for perfect form and function.

How long do Dental Bridges last?

Our bridges are designed to last a lifetime with proper care.

What are the costs?

Costs depend upon the number of teeth being replaced and the location. Bridges are a cost effective option because they can last for a very long time. Contact us to set up an appointment for a dental bridge.

What are Adhesive Bridges?

An adhesive bridge is a dental restoration that spans an area that has no teeth and is connected to natural teeth at each end, preserving form and original aesthetics. An adhesive bridge requires very little alteration of existing teeth; often an old filling can be removed and the space used to anchor the bridge. Adhesive bridges are bonded to one or two teeth next to the gap and can be completed in one day at our Lima dental clinic.
